Discover the History of the Cemetery in Csörsz utca

Discover the History of the Cemetery in Csörsz utca

Guide: Viktor Cseh

The cemetery in Csörsz utca is one of the oldest in Buda, and was indeed the first orthodox burial ground in the capital. The city now encloses the graveyard, and its gates are opened to the public only on special occasions. The walk touches on the grave of Orthodox Chief Rabbi and Upper House member Jákov Koppel Reich, whose funeral procession from the Kazinczy utca synagogue in 1929 was attended by thousands. The grave is covered with a stone tent.
Visitors can see the Freudigers’ grave; the coat of arms that adorns was commissioned by Mózes Freudiger when he was raised to noble rank in 1910.

We can walk the kohanim’s path, which allowed priests to avoid ritual impurity.

Meeting point: outside MOM Kulturális Központ (1122 Budapest, Csörsz utca 18.)
Duration: 1 hour
Male visitors are requested to bring some form of headwear.
